Eli Pariser: Beware online "filter bubbles"

I've never been convinced that algorithmic filters are the perfect solution either, even if we create them with diversity and serendipity as a goal:

Sortby

But we need some level of social filtering at different times, just because of the pure volume of data available.

Look for human curators, as well as computers.

Hat tip to Elsua.

Curating news through social media using Storify

What is Storify?
Storify is a way to tell stories using social media such as Tweets, photos and videos. You search multiple social networks from one place, and then drag individual elements into your story. You can re-order the elements and also add text to give context to your readers.
Why should I make stories with Storify?
Millions of people are sharing content through social media. But these streams of information are quickly lost in the never-ending stream of updates. With Storify, you can put together the best Tweets, photos and videos to make stories that will be remembered.

Having only moved into public beta recently, it looks Storify itself is going to get a lot of attention because of Osama bin Laden's death. News channels like Australia's own ABC is used it to curate breaking news collected through social media.

In the long term, it will be interested to see if there is a real niche for specialist curation tools like this or if the functionality will fold into existing blogging platforms, particularly the short-form orientated blogging platforms like Posterous and Tumblr and other microblogging platforms that are prepared to break the Twitter model based on 140 characters.

Digital Curation: Data, with a touch of trust

Curation is the process by which aggregate data is imbued with personalised trust.

Good quote from JP.

Just a thought: Curation is not the same as creating content, in the way for example that a pro-blogger earns a living like any other advertising driven channel. So with that in mind, I wonder, can someone make a living (a job, a business, etc) from being a digital curator? Or is it something that is purely social and altruistic?

In other words, can we buy this kind of trust and are we willing to pay for it?
